At Parkway, the arts are a core part
of the curriculum

We feel it’s impossible to nurture and develop the whole child without the creative nature of the arts. From music class, visual arts like drawing and painting, to drama and photography, there are a wide variety of opportunities for students to engage and grow their creative talents and gifts.

Music

Parkway’s music offerings include choir and band. Students have the opportunity to perform in school chapels and to compete at the local and state level.

At the elementary school level, students experience music through singing, playing, listening, moving and analyzing. They also develop musical skills at age appropriate levels while gaining an understanding of music in relationship to other arts, history and culture.

Elementary choir introduces students to the process of developing their vocal skills and musicianship. An emphasis is places on raising the level of proficiency in vocal technique, singing in an ensemble, sight-reading, music theory, music history and the performance of various genres of music.

Elementary beginning band introduces music theory, tone production, posture performance, and working together as a group.

Students in grades 1-5 participate in yearly musical performances to showcase what they have learned in the classroom.

Middle school and high school choir raises the level of proficiency in vocal technique, singing in an ensemble, sight-reading, music theory, music history, and the performances of various genres of music. A variety of styles and languages encompass the music literature chosen for these choirs.

Visual Art

Whether it’s an oversized crayon in a kindergarten class or an artist’s paintbrush and acrylics in the high school, Parkway students of all ages have many opportunities to cultivate creativity in the visual arts. In visual art classes, students develop their practice of art-making skill, expression, and originality with a wide variety of mediums and subject matter in both traditional and innovative techniques.

As image bearers of our creative God, elementary art students will view creation reflected in what great artists have made, as well as what they learn and make in class. The elementary art curriculum follows the four components of discipline-based art education: art production, art history, art criticism, and the aesthetics. Our focus is on the elements of art, the principles of design, and a variety of art media.

In upper elementary, students will begin learning technical skills in different art mediums such as drawing, painting, and mixed media. They will also be exposed to the artwork of famous art masters. Each student will understand that God gives artistic ability to reflect Him as Creator while working in a collaborative art community.

Middle and high school art courses emphasize the basic understanding of the elements, and principles of design concepts that serve as the foundation for all works of art. Students will learn the major art media such as design, and 2D and 3D art forms and will create their own art works using those media. Students will also learn about various artists, art styles, and cultures while applying their knowledge to the art media projects.

Theater Arts

Our middle and high school students study a Christian approach to the arts, participate in drama sketches and learn to use the theatrical arts to share the gospel and glorify God.  Students learn stage directions, creating and developing a believable character and emotional responses using dialogue and physical movement.  Our students study the technical aspects of running a show including set design, costuming and lighting.

Students currently perform several yearly productions including a Christmas musical and spring production.
